I decided to give the patch a try on mine. I pulled my GTA out of the closet and put it into the PS3. Got the patch, no freezing. Played some missions then got an invite from StPaddy for some multiplayer. Did multiplayer for only about 15 minutes cause I had to leave. We will see how it goes from here.

I've gone through the same e-mail responses from both also. Although I didn't recall seeing a free t-shirt deal. Will have to find out. Thanks.

Some prize for not bieng able to play the game you just spent 60 clams on huh?

Long story for me.
Sony tells me that my ps3 needs repair posably replaced, but it's not defective and in no way is Sony resposable (BS)
They will repair or replace for thae cost of $150.00
So I decided to call in my extended warranty through Fredmeyers. I tell the person on the line about what's wrong with my PS3 unit. She then proceeeds to explain to me that my warranty with them was valid only one year after the manufactuers warranty and has ended. My brian just whent into glitch mode at that moment thinking HUH?. I told the person ''Yeah I know it's one year after the manufactuers warranty expiers. I purchased my PS3 NOV. 17th 2006 my warranty with Sony ended NOV. 17th 2007. See how that works? I have five more months.'' She then replied with. '' No sir you don't under stand. Sony only has a 90 day parts and labor warranty on all there products. Your warranty ended Feb. 17th'' I kid you not she actualy told me this! I argued with her for a minute and she flat out told me if I think this is not true to contact Sony for myself and if they say otherwise have them call us with the updated information. So not bieng one to look the fool I contacted Sony and of course it is a one year parts and labor warranty. They also told me that they would pass the information along to Fredmeyers warranty service but it would also be a good idea to call them myself and insist they are incorrect. So I called back to the Fredmeyers warranty service and got a different person this time. I explained to him my problems with my ps3 and the problem I had with the person before him. He told me and I quote ''She is absolutly insane for telling you that at all'' Sudenly a sigh of relief... He then told me they would be sending a shipping label and that they would repair or replace my system. So all is well in Technageek land until I have to give up my ps3 to have it fixed. This is bad timing with somany great games comming and already available it's kinda sad to think I have to wait some of it out. Oh well... Sorry for the ranting but had to get it out.

Exactly what I was thinking myself. I asked flat out is my machine defective? I got the responce no it is not. It doese need repair or replacing. I then questioned. But you know I have never droped, hit banged, exposed it to any type of liquid or extream heat nor have I used any type of modifacation or cheat devices and have treated it as well if not better then my own children plus the only thing I have a problem with is GTA IV and all I have to do is give you my seriel number and you know my machine needs to be repaired or replaced? He really didn't have much of an answer after that and I told him that it was all total BS. The only thing that has prevented me from going postal is the fact that I have an extended warranty and I'm bieng taken care of.
I hope you get your situation rectifide soon. I hate to see a fellow MAAN go without and especialy when it's through no fault of his own.
I have been reading a few boards and from what I have gathered people have had fairly better luck with this Sony support number rather then the more known one

thank you techno geek. I called the number you listed and talked with a guy named Jeff. He went through the normal bs of them getting a low volume of calls regarding the matter with GTA4, blah, blah, blah. After I explained what was going on, he said that he was authorized to replace my unit with an exact 60 gig model even though i am way out of warranty. After I asked him his name again and said that my unit was way out of warranty , again, he said he was authorized to wave the warranty restriction for a replacement and that Sony did have factory 60 gigs still available for Warr replacement. A reman would be my guess. I did not have all of my machine info with me at work so as soon as I get home I will be calling referencing my support number. I will update when I get past the 2nd call.

I'm ready to blow so , so far so good, assuming ofcourse it fixes the problem.

Sounds like they are taking care of you. I got the shaft by Sony. But thankfully I have an extended warranty. I just hope they send it to Sony to have it fixed.

Where else would they send it? If it wasn't Sony are they just "shot gunning" parts?

I'm sure they are sending it to Sony. I just hope they don't send it to some fly by night repair shop that's shotgunniing parts to save a buck.

S i talked with a Sony tech/rep and they are sending me a box to ship my unit to them to get a "fixed" exchange. I'm way out of the Sony warranty and don't have an aftermarket one so this is a good thing that they're willing to step up. My only problem is when I asked the guy what the problem was, he couldn't tell me. I swear I think they're programmed to dance around the issue because they don't know. i would have more respect for them if they just flat out told me that they didn't have that kind of information because they're just phone trolls. Either way I didn't push the issue. I didn't want the kid to get pissed at me and take back the offer. So i'm waiting for my box to arrive so i can watch part of my family (PS3) leave adn have one of it's brothers return. It's going to be a hard 10-14 days without it.

Check this out. I recived yet another email from sony stating this

Dear PlayStation(R) Owner,

Recently you contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) Consumer
Services department regarding your PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system
and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Rockstar, GTA IV's publisher, and SCEA are both aware that an issue may have
affected a limited number of our consumers who purchased GTA IV.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Although we have
seen an extremely low volume of contacts to our Consumer Services department
regarding such an issue, we want to ensure that every consumer has a great
experience on our console and with GTA IV. We have identified a solution that
should resolve your issue.
Offline Issue - If you are experiencing freezing while playing offline, please call our Consumer Services
Department at 1-800-345-7669.
Please reference the service request number below when calling Consumer
Services.
Service Request Number: *-********

So what the heck I'll bite and give them a call. I gave the lady my refrence number and she had all my information right away and then proceeded to place me on hold at least 5 times each time asking me ''Now when dose your game freeze?'' Finaly she sais well we do offer a service or exchange for $149.00 I told her I am not paying that I just want my unit to work properly. She then asked me to hold one more time and transfered my call to tech support. She gave me the rutine R* SCEA hopes everybody has a great bla blah blah speech. Then told me that they are offering a one time console exchange as a gesture of goodwill. My unit will be replaced with the same 20gb unit. :welcome:
I also asked what it is that is causing this problem and got the same old song and dance. But as of right now I'm sitting a little bit happier knowing I am dealing directly with Sony.
Yeah it will be a little sad knowing a family member is going to be removed. We will definitly miss my little sony (as we call her). All the good time we had together. *sniff*

I haven't been able to get past the scene at Roman's apartment since first purchasing the game. 100% lockup every time. Nothing works, not even the PS button.
My mom lied. She said I had two strikes against me starting out in life. One was being black. The other was being a man. Thusfar, both have been nothing but a benefit!

Call this number Toll-Free Helpline at 866-286-5123
Be sure to tell them the game freezes up during game play. They wil ask all sorts of tricky questions just stick to the story your system freezes up usualy just after the first cutsceen and I can get maybe 5min of gameplay on a lucky day. If your system is out of warranty they will tell you they have a sevrice for replacement for $149 Do not eccept it! Tell them I do not want to pay to have my cosole work the way it's supposed to. Is there anything you can do for me? Hopfully they will put you through to the 2nd level tech support who will ask you the same questions again. Stick to your story. Do not I repete do not tell them of any other problems with any other games. Only GTA IV everything else is working perfectly fine. Or they will not help you out.
Goodluck and god speed.

Exactly. I had to tell all sorts of different folks when my shit froze. Only with GTA4! I actually wrote it down and just read it from my page, that way they all got the same wording. I told them that It would freeze multiple times, multiple ways. The first time it would freeze doing the single player mode maybe 15 minutes into the game. Didn't matter where or what I was doing. The picture froze but I still had sound. Nothing would work to get me out of it but a "hard" reset. The PS button would not not bring up the quit game screen

I could then play for about 30 minutes more and BANG, the same thing. Also when I am in multiplayer mode it would freeze the same way at the exact time frames. Only on multiplayer would it occasionaly kick me off line with a message of "session ended, returning to single player". But it would do it at least once every time I was on. I can only play for so long before I turn it off and get pissed. It only happens with GTA4.

Feel free to use this wording. i t worked for me. My PS3 was way out of the factory warranty and they still offered the free replacement of what I had. Don't be afraid to ask for the next level of support if the kid isn't telling you or answering your questions like they should.

I even went as far to say " Look, bud, I don't know if your superiors just aren't telling you whats going on or if your giving me the same spiel as everyone else. But just so you know, I don't appreciate it. I know that to the corporate customer service a low volume of calls may make me feel better, but it doesn't. I need to speak with someone who knows about the system and the problems that I am experiencing. No offense to you, but your not giving me anything but general answers and I would like to think i'm more than the general public. So unless you can start giving me SPECIFIC answers, i need to speak with someone on the next level."

At the beginning of the call make sure you get the kids name and let them know that you are documenting the call. Ask them what time they have so you can note it. This from the beginning of the conversation will signal to them that you have done this before and are keeping track. Hope this helps. Any questions from anyone, please ask.

Well, I called the 800 number and my PS3 coffin box should arrive tomorrow. The guy I spoke with on the phone wasn't tricky and didn't seem interested in me explaining the whole story to him. They are sending me a replacement and that was the end of that. He was swift, courteous, and just got my shit taken care of. Much appreciative. DO NOT PAY them for their problem! I will agree with whomever was the first to suggest that!

I thought about waiting until the weekend was over cause I have a lot of family coming over for my daughters birthday. But I took a step back and told myself the sooner you get it shiped out the sooner you get the replacement. Sent it off today. It's been two days now without playing on my PS3 and I must say I think it would be easier to quit smoking. :guns:
