i got the 60gb last summer before discontinuation and played about 4 hours with no problems. hope it stays that way

Same here. Played for a few hours yesterday. Just a small amount of "hiccup" at one point, but I've seen worse and if i had blinked or taken a sip of my beer, I would have missed it.

Fun times. Off to go beat up old men.

Here is an article I saw today in Yahoo! about the issue. Looks like it's a memory cache issue. Good luck on getting it fixed.

As of tonight, my GTAIV will no longer even play. It freezes mostly on the opening loading screen and I have to shut the PS3 down manually and restart. Only once did it make it past the loading screen, then froze mid mission movie with audio still going. I've tried it a number of times with the same results. All other games work.

Best $90.00 I've ever spent

I'm in the same boat. After playing for 3 days straight without any issue. I try to load it up tonight. Blam...stuck at "Loading Concrete Jungle..." Deleted game data and copied save game to another profile, now it's stuck at "Starting A New Game..." This fucking blows. I love how the folks at R* seem to have been caught with their collective cocks in their hands about this issue, and are completely ignoring it. "There's nothing they can do about it anyway...we've already got their $$$" (as they're laughing to and from the bank).

From what I've been reading in various posts on PSU, there is a patch "coming".

I'm not technical at all and have no clue what would cause this but, a temporary fix is to turn auto sign in off in the XMB and you can play single player mode fine. I haven't tried it personally but, it seems to have fixed several peoples experiences with freezing. I wonder if it's a problem with stats being recorded with R*. Also, probably doesn't help with the Social Club aspect of it either. I wonder if there is a way to disable that?

I've came to the decision to put this game aside until something is done about it. The number of hardware problems people are reporting due to this issue are astounding. Quite a few bricked PS3's. It's COD3 scare all over again and, being out of warranty/lost receipt for my PS3, I do not need a game destroying an irreplaceable(60gb) $600.00 console.

SAME HERE! I am stuck "Loading - Jamaican Heat"...... WTF! I have to re-boot and all that shit over and over. Watching the opening scenes like 5 times over. I thought COD4 was bad when it came out, but this tops it. I know I cannot return this game for a full refund, they will only switch it out. I am really close to brining it to gamestop and being done with it. This is very bad.

It's worse. Seems the patch I read about doesn't exist and the amount of people calling tech support on the problem is "minimal". They are looking into it and trying to figure out what the problem might be. So, while the rest of the world gets better and better at the game, we are stuck being n00bs until, and if, they fix it. I'd be happy for a full refund at this time and just be done with it if they don't find any solution but, you know that won't happen.

I signed out of the PSN and disabled auto sign in. Was able to start a game. Seems like we've found a winner.

Edit: Signed in to attempt multi player from in-game...immediate lock up. seems like it's related to the multiplayer/PSN. Gay.

this must be why i never got locked up.i dont think i was ever signed into the PSN for single player.guess ill have to try some multi player games to see if it will lock up on me.

I've played for about 10 hours already, and right now I'm staring at the game load screen for the last 10 fucking minutes.

I also have a launch 60gb Playstation 3, I played for 3 days with no problems. Until I tried to go online, after that it freezes on the loading screen. I should have never tried to go online and I would be fine. I took my game back to Gamestop and they gave me another new game. I am now going to try to return it to wal mart or target. Even $60 worth of store credit is better than a game that wont play.

No kidding. Gee, to fix the problem, disable a major part of the PS3's functionality "THE NETWORK"! So Rockstar did turn out to be Retardedstar. I should have waited on this one. Extremely disappointed. It would have been more fun to throw $60 out of my window going 95mph down Interstate 294. But it's my fault. Never again, not buying the hype ever again.

Stuck on the loading screen.
Backed up my save file, reinstalled the game still no joy. To top it off I heard the release date was made 2 days before someone went into administration!

Here's my side of this story:
I played story mode for awhile and didn't have any problems, never able to join anybody online. was finally able to play with Nevadan and TruHiker online yesterday. After repeated attempts to get others to join our game or to accept their invites (sorry Pimble) I decided to play story mode some more. I exited online play and tried to enter story mode and got the now infamous lock at loading screen.
Got pissed. I quit the game (using the PS button, why isn't there a quit game feature?) and it immediately restarted the PS3 rather than exit to the XMB like other games do. I played Warhawk for awhile then decided to try GTA4 story mode again. Strangely enough it loaded on the first attempt.
Bottom line is this definitely appears to be an effect of the online play issues. Try playing something else after playing online and before playing story mode afterwards.

I have had a couple of lock ups. Once with audio still going, other times just lock up completely. I seem to be having more problems getting the game to load. Sturg31 was telling me he has loading problems as well from the title screen. It usually takes me having to load it 2 or 3 times to get the game to work. And when it does this and I quit game to go back to the psx screen it resets my whole system. I have the 60 GB I got after the first price drop. Is it the game or this particular system? I've pondered the idea of taking the game back and exchanging it.
